Prinicipals of Primary Schools have recently called for a dress code for parents entering the school premises.
This is embarrassing, but maybe needed for a very small fraction of parents who insists on wearing clothes way too small for themselves and styles that were designed for the bedroom or bathroom.
I really believe that once again, there is an exaggerated reaction by Principals and once again, their actions may only cause embarrassment for some parents and create a wider gap between parents and the school.
Principals have the ability to request a meeting with any parent and they should use these opportunities to meet with a parent on a one and one and have a discussion with the parent about his or her dress. It might give the principal an opportunity to access the parent and get any help that the particular parent might need.
To make blanket statements like - no wearing of strap shirts or dresses- is to me, simply ridiculous as straps are not inappropriate dress for a simple school pick up. Straps suit our climate and they are a healthy choice of clothing. Straps only become inappropriate when a size 18 try to wear a size 6 outfit.
I can only hope that those sitting down and making the decisions include persons who understand that what may be inappropriate wear for one person may not be inappropriate for a person of a diffferent size and shape.
I really believe that principals and those in authority need to stop shying away from meeting with offending persons and deal with matters without embarrassing parents. A dress code for parents should not even be a news item, but sadly it is,
Let us shy away from making rules that will be broken and create unnecessaary scenes in front of children, when matters can be handled in a more effective and efficient way.
